Wedding planning

Wedding planning has the propensity to take on a life of its own. In the months since the engagement I’ve been on the computer non-stop gathering guests’ email and home addresses, researching invitation suites, and collecting inspiration.

We’ve managed to finalize the major vendors in time before the rush of wedding season (40% of couples are engaged between Thanksgiving and New Years!) and can now turn our attention towards the fun stuff like wedding dress shopping and reception decor.

The lure of Pinterest doesn’t make this easy. I often remind myself to take a step back from the computer and retreat into my imagination before I get too carried away with ideas that are really not our style and mind-numbingly expensive anyway. I ask myself about a million times a day what do we really want?

When I enter planning mode I try my best to keep a single mantra in mind – that is, the answer to what is the purpose of the wedding. Simply put, to get married, of course! No bells or whistles (or stunning ranunculus bouquets) required.

But, to celebrate this incredible milestone moment we throw an epic party. And epic deserves glitter! and bunting! and lanterns! And so it’s back to the planning. A (growing) list is about the only thing keeping me sane right now so here’s what we’ve done and have yet to do.

  • Set the date
  • Secure an officiant
  • Decide on a venue
  • Choose a caterer
  • Hire a photographer & videographer
  • Choose a color scheme
  • Organize floral arrangements
  • Ask the bridal party
  • Make and send save the dates
  • Design and send invitations
  • Reserve block of hotel rooms
  • Shop for and buy a wedding dress
  • Purchase wedding bands
  • Finalize ceremony
  • Write vow sentiments
  • Decide on bridal party attire
  • Plan rehearsal dinner menu
  • Design programs
  • Design placecards
  • Find a ketubah
  • Take engagement photos
  • Have a wedding shower
  • Determine our dessert plan
  • Create reception decor
  • Design chuppah
  • Make welcome baskets
  • Find attendant gifts
  • Choose favors and make favors
  • Order a marriage license
  • Reserve wedding night hotel room
  • Make honeymoon plan!

Looking at it now I think we’re in pretty great shape. Lots more to come!
